St. Patrick's Day Parade NYC Transportation
March 17. 5th Avenue shut down from 44th to 79th Street. 150,000+ marchers, 2 million spectators, and zero crosstown movement through Midtown from 11 AM until after 5 PM. Your chauffeur drops you on Park Avenue or 6th Avenue — one block from the parade — and stays with you all day through post-parade pub runs.
35 Blocks of 5th Avenue Sealed — Navigating March 17th
The NYC St. Patrick's Day Parade is the oldest and largest in the world — held continuously since 1762. Every March 17, between 150,000 and 250,000 marchers process up 5th Avenue from 44th Street to 79th Street while 1 to 2 million spectators line the route. It is one of the most significant road closure events in Manhattan each year.
The parade creates a hard barrier across Midtown and the Upper East Side. 5th Avenue is completely closed from 42nd to 79th Street, with dozens of cross-streets restricted. Cross-town movement between the East and West sides becomes nearly impossible from mid-morning through early evening. Taxis and rideshare services face extreme difficulty navigating the area, and surge pricing spikes throughout the afternoon.
True North VIP provides reservation-based car service with chauffeurs who know exactly where vehicle access remains available on parade day. We use strategic drop-off points on Park Avenue, Lexington Avenue, 6th Avenue, and 7th Avenue — putting you within one or two blocks of the parade route without fighting closed streets. Our hourly chauffeur service is ideal for parade day: your vehicle stays with you, ready when you decide to leave.
2026 Parade Route & Key Locations
The parade marches northbound on 5th Avenue — 35 blocks of closures through the heart of Midtown and the Upper East Side.
Parade Start
The parade steps off at 44th Street and 5th Avenue at approximately 11:00 AM. Marchers proceed northbound. The staging area south of 44th Street begins closing to traffic by 6:00-7:00 AM as units assemble.
St. Patrick's Cathedral
Located at 50th-51st Street on 5th Avenue — the emotional and ceremonial heart of the parade. The reviewing stand and VIP viewing area are positioned along this stretch. Arrive early for the best positions near the Cathedral.
Reviewing Stand
The official reviewing stand is located at approximately 64th Street on 5th Avenue. This is where parade dignitaries, honorees, and VIP guests view the procession. Corporate hospitality groups often target this area.
Parade End
The parade concludes at 79th Street on 5th Avenue. Final marching units typically pass the reviewing stand between 4:30 and 5:00 PM. Road cleanup and reopening can extend until 6:00 PM or later.
FDR Drive & West Side Hwy
Both the FDR Drive (east side) and the West Side Highway/Henry Hudson Parkway (west side) remain open throughout parade day. These north-south corridors are your best bet for longer-distance travel through Manhattan.
Cross-Town Reality
Cross-town streets between 42nd and 79th are severely restricted during the parade. East-west movement through this zone requires significant detours — often down to the 30s or up to the 80s. Plan accordingly.
Road Closures & Timing Guide
The parade creates one of the most extensive road closure patterns in Manhattan. Here is the timeline our chauffeurs work around.
Strategic Drop-Off & Pickup
5th Avenue is closed — but our chauffeurs position you within one or two blocks of the parade using these approach routes.
Park Ave / Lexington Ave
The preferred approach for east-side viewing near St. Patrick's Cathedral (50th-51st St) or the reviewing stand area (64th St). Drop-off on Park Avenue or Lexington Avenue puts you one block east of the parade. Approach from the south via Park Avenue or from the north via Lexington. Our chauffeurs monitor which cross-streets remain open for the closest possible drop-off.
6th Ave / 7th Ave
For west-side viewing or when approaching from the West Side Highway or Midtown West hotels. Drop-off on 6th Avenue (Avenue of the Americas) or 7th Avenue puts you one to two blocks west of the parade route. 6th Avenue is typically the closer option for viewing near Rockefeller Center (49th-50th St). 7th Avenue works well for Times Square-area hotel pickups.
How Parade Day Transportation Works
Four steps from booking to your post-parade destination.
Reserve Parade Day
Call +1-347-321-9929 or book at truenorthvip.com/book. Tell us where you want to watch — near St. Patrick's Cathedral at 50th, the reviewing stand at 64th, or the parade's end at 79th — and we plan the approach.
Leave Before 9:30 AM
Closures begin early and intensify by 10 AM. Your chauffeur arrives at your door with time to spare, routing through still-open avenues to position you before the 11 AM step-off.
Drop-Off One Block Away
Park Avenue for east-side viewing near the Cathedral. 6th Avenue for west-side views near Rockefeller Center. Your chauffeur checks open cross-streets in real time and picks the closest one.
Post-Parade Pub Run
After the last marching band passes, name your pub — 2nd Avenue Irish bars on the Upper East Side, a Midtown restaurant, or somewhere downtown. Your chauffeur navigates the post-parade gridlock while you celebrate.
