How long is the drive from Newark Airport to Grand Central?

Without traffic, Newark Airport to Grand Central is about 31 to 34 minutes and 16 to 17 miles, by routing estimates for the two trips below. The last part is crosstown, from the Lincoln Tunnel exit on the West Side to Park Avenue, and 42nd Street traffic decides how long that takes. Rush hours add time.

TripDistanceDrive time without traffic

Terminal A to The Westin New York Grand Central16.9 miabout 34 min (estimate)

Drive times are estimates (OSRM free-flow routing with no traffic, checked Oct 30, 2026). Traffic varies, and rush hour, weather, tunnel delays and airport construction add time.

Which route does the chauffeur take, and what tolls apply?

The chauffeur takes US 1 and 9 north from the airport, Route 495 to the Lincoln Tunnel, and then crosses Midtown to East 42nd Street. The crosstown part runs on 42nd Street or a parallel street in the 30s, chosen by traffic, and ends at the Grand Central entrance or hotel you named in the booking.

The Port Authority collects the Lincoln Tunnel toll only from drivers entering New York (panynj.gov), and it is already in your price. Grand Central is inside the MTA Congestion Relief Zone, so the $0.75 black car charge per trip applies (MTA). That is in the price too.

Car service, bus or train from Newark to Grand Central?

The NJ TRANSIT train goes to Penn Station instead, so you would add a subway or taxi across town. A car goes from your terminal pickup point to the Grand Central entrance you choose, with your bags.

Which Grand Central entrance should I choose?

Grand Central has several street entrances, and the right one depends on where you go next. The main 42nd Street entrance suits hotel stays and the Main Concourse. The Lexington Avenue side is closer to The Westin and East Side offices. For the LIRR, Grand Central Madison is below the station, with entrances near Madison Avenue.

I have a train to catch at Grand Central. How much time should I allow?

Plan the ride around the train, not the landing. Add time for bags, the walk to your pickup point and Midtown traffic, then a buffer before departure. Metro-North and LIRR trains leave on time, so if the gap is tight, book an SUV with room for bags and tell us the train time in the notes.

How does waiting time work?

Waiting time depends on the pickup. Home, hotel and office pickups have a 15-minute grace period, after which waiting time applies. Airport arrivals have a 60-minute wait time after a domestic landing and a 90-minute wait time after an international landing, counted from when the flight lands, and every airport pickup includes flight tracking, so an early or late flight moves your pickup with it.

Pickup typeGrace period or wait time
Regular pickup (home, hotel, office)15 minutes
Domestic flight arrival60 minutes after landing
International flight arrival90 minutes after landing
Flight trackingIncluded on airport pickups

See the wait time policy for the full terms, and add meet and greet if you want the chauffeur inside the terminal.

Can I book a multi-leg trip?

Yes. A multi-leg trip puts several stops or legs on one booking, such as a bag drop at an East Midtown hotel before a train at Grand Central. Add each stop at /book and the all-in price covers the whole trip. If the car should wait at a stop, hourly service at $120 per hour, 3-hour minimum, may fit better.
