You arrive at JFK on one carrier and depart from LaGuardia on another—or vice versa. The reason it requires a private car: no public transit connects these two airports. The Q70 bus runs from LGA to the 7 train, but getting from JFK to LGA by transit takes 90+ minutes and multiple transfers with luggage.

The Van Wyck and Grand Central: Your Two-Highway Transfer
Van Wyck Expressway
The Van Wyck connects JFK to the rest of Queens and is the primary bottleneck. It funnels all JFK traffic into a limited number of lanes heading north. Weekday congestion can double the 15-minute segment to 30+.
Grand Central Parkway
This parkway runs along northern Queens directly to LaGuardia. Traffic pattern depends on time of day and whether there are events at Citi Field or the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center nearby.

Baggage claim at JFK international terminals runs 20–40 minutes. If your LGA connection is under 2.5 hours away, traveling carry-on only is the difference between comfortable and cutting it close.

International arrivals at JFK add 20–45 minutes for customs and immigration before you even reach the pickup area. Factor this into your connection window—it is the single biggest variable.

LaGuardia’s Terminal B (the main terminal serving American, Southwest, United, and others) directs for-hire vehicle pickups to the Terminal B Parking Garage, Level 2—not the general curbside where taxis queue. If you walk out the wrong exit and wait at the taxi stand, you will not find your chauffeur.
