How long is the drive from the Upper East Side to Newark?

Without traffic, the Upper East Side to Newark Airport is about 35 to 39 minutes and 18.5 miles, by routing estimates for the two trips below. Much of that time is crosstown, from the East Side to the Lincoln Tunnel on the West Side. Weekday afternoons in the tunnel and on Route 495 add time.

TripDistanceDrive time without traffic
The Carlyle (E 76th St) to Terminal C18.5 miabout 35 min (estimate)
Terminal B to The Metropolitan Museum of Art, arrival18.6 miabout 39 min (estimate)

Drive times are estimates (OSRM free-flow routing with no traffic, checked Oct 30, 2026). Traffic varies, and rush hour, weather, tunnel delays and airport construction add time.

When should I leave the Upper East Side for Newark?

Work back from the time your airline asks you to be at the airport, then add the drive estimate and a traffic buffer. Crosstown streets and the Lincoln Tunnel are slow on weekday afternoons and before holidays. If you are unsure, choose an earlier pickup; your pickup has a 15-minute grace period.

Which route does the chauffeur take, and what tolls apply?

From the Upper East Side, the chauffeur crosses Central Park or Midtown to Ninth Avenue and enters the Lincoln Tunnel, then takes Route 495 and US 1 and 9 south to the airport. On the way home, the same tunnel brings you into the West 30s and 40s, and the car heads uptown and across to your address.

Road or crossingWhat it does on this tripToll
Crosstown streets or a park transverseEast Side to Ninth AvenueNo toll
Lincoln TunnelCrosses the Hudson to New JerseyNo toll toward New Jersey; toll entering New York
Route 495Weehawken approach to the tunnelNo toll
US 1 and 9Main road to the Newark terminalsNo toll

The Port Authority collects the Lincoln Tunnel toll only from drivers entering New York (panynj.gov), so it applies on the ride home, and it is in the price. The New York State congestion surcharge ($2.75 for a for-hire trip) applies only to trips that begin and end in New York State, so a trip to or from Newark does not carry it (NYS Tax Department).

Where will my chauffeur meet me when I land at Newark Airport?

On the ride home, the meeting point comes first. The chauffeur tracks your flight into Newark, so you can collect your bags before you call. The default pickup is the arrivals curb at Terminal A or B. At Newark Terminal C, your chauffeur meets you at the arrivals curb or in the Terminal C Garage, Level 3. Meet and greet puts the chauffeur inside with a name sign.

  1. Add your airline and flight number when you book. The chauffeur tracks the flight from takeoff.
  2. After landing, collect your bags at Terminal A, B or C and call 888-887-0324 or the chauffeur number in your booking.
  3. At Terminal A or B, walk to the arrivals curb. At Newark Terminal C, your chauffeur meets you at the arrivals curb or in the Terminal C Garage, Level 3.
  4. With meet and greet ($25), the chauffeur waits inside the terminal with a name sign and walks you to the car.

How does waiting time work?

Waiting time depends on the pickup. Home, hotel and office pickups have a 15-minute grace period, after which waiting time applies. Airport arrivals have a 60-minute wait time after a domestic landing and a 90-minute wait time after an international landing, counted from when the flight lands, and every airport pickup includes flight tracking, so an early or late flight moves your pickup with it.
