Penn Station Car Service: What You Need to Know

Penn Station at 7th Avenue and 32nd Street is the busiest rail hub in the Western Hemisphere, serving over 600,000 passengers daily across Amtrak, NJ Transit, and the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR). Madison Square Garden sits directly above the station, adding event traffic from Knicks, Rangers, concerts, and UFC fights to an already congested zone.

Moynihan Train Hall, opened January 2021 inside the historic James A. Farley Post Office building at 421 8th Avenue, provides a dramatic skylit concourse for Amtrak passengers. The hall connects directly to Penn Station's underground platforms, meaning Amtrak travelers typically exit on the 8th Avenue side, while NJ Transit and LIRR passengers exit via the 7th Avenue concourse.

Two primary ride intents converge here: airport transfers for rail passengers connecting to JFK, LGA, or EWR, and point-to-point transfers to hotels, offices, and destinations across Manhattan. The ongoing Gateway Hudson Tunnel project adds construction complexity to the surrounding streets.

True North VIP provides professional car service at both Penn Station exits: 8th Avenue staging for Moynihan/Amtrak passengers and 7th Avenue positioning for NJ Transit/LIRR arrivals — with chauffeurs who track train arrivals and adjust for MSG event traffic automatically.

Penn Station Pickup Zones

Four staging options depending on which rail service you arrive on and which exit you use.

8th Avenue (Moynihan / Amtrak)

Staging: 8th Avenue between 31st and 33rd Streets, along the Moynihan Train Hall facade

Best for: Amtrak arrivals, Moynihan Train Hall exits, connections from the Acela corridor

Notes: Preferred pickup side for Amtrak. Less congested than 7th Avenue. The Moynihan entrance provides a grand indoor waiting area with seating.

7th Avenue (NJ Transit / LIRR)

Staging: 7th Avenue between 31st and 33rd Streets, near the main Penn Station entrance

Best for: NJ Transit arrivals, LIRR arrivals, connections to the 1/2/3 subway lines

Notes: More congested than 8th Avenue, especially during MSG events. If possible, use the cross-street alternatives during peak times.

31st Street (Cross-Street Alternative)

Staging: West 31st Street between 7th and 8th Avenues

Best for: MSG event avoidance, lower-traffic alternative to avenue pickup

Notes: Quieter than the main avenues. Good option when 7th and 8th Avenues are congested. Exit Penn Station via 31st Street doors.

33rd Street (MSG Events)

Staging: West 33rd Street between 7th and 8th Avenues

Best for: Post-MSG event pickups, connections to Herald Square area

Notes: Used primarily as an overflow staging option during MSG events. One block from the main MSG entrance on 7th Avenue. Less congested than 7th Avenue itself post-event.

Madison Square Garden Event Routing

MSG sits directly above Penn Station. When 20,000 fans pour out of the arena, the surrounding blocks become some of the most congested in Manhattan. Our chauffeurs plan for it.

Pre-Event Dropoff

For dropoffs before Knicks, Rangers, or concert events, we recommend arriving 30–45 minutes before showtime. Your chauffeur drops you at 7th Avenue between 31st and 33rd—the main MSG entrance. Before the event crowd arrives, this area is manageable. For dedicated MSG car service, see our full MSG page.

Post-Event Pickup

Post-event is the challenge. When 20,000 people exit MSG simultaneously, 7th Avenue between 31st and 34th becomes a pedestrian and vehicle traffic jam. We stage on 31st Street west of 8th Avenue or 34th Street east of 8th—one block away from the main exit but dramatically less congested. Text your chauffeur when the event ends and they guide you to the nearest staging point.
